Shameless Shill!
Crazy dancing mouse
mavinmaverick
I have just launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to hire an editor/marketer for my soon to be finished novel project "Conspiracy's Doorstep." Right now it's looking like I'll need around $2,500, so my goal is a bit higher than, just in case. This shameless shill is by no means a command that you donate, but please spread the word around to anyone you think might be interested. All of the donation tiers have e-copies of the book as rewards, and there are some other things as well.

If you find you have a few spare bucks, or you know people who are looking to fund a project like this, please feel free to drop by the site: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/594617681/fund-conspiracys-doorstep

Any little bit will help, and I thank you from the bottom of my cold, cruel heart!

Thoughts to Ponder

I recently had a conversation with my brother that revealed something I never really considered about him. Just a little bit of background...my brother and I are very much alike; so much so that we never really got along. We're both rather independent and tend to do things our own way regardless of what anyone else thinks. I think my parents (in particular my mom) raised us this way for the most part, by using the belief that one should never tell their kids what not to do, because the kids will do it anyway.

So, fast forward to the other day. I was texting my brother and the conversation ended with me making a comment about how he had become domestic. He replied that "Yes, no more feral fun for this alley cat" (he recently got married and dropped out of the band he was in). I said I wouldn't tell anyone if he wanted to sneak out once in awhile, and he replied with, "Sweet deal, meow."

So, what does this mean? It means something I should have realized a long time ago. He's as much a furry as I am. He's always liked having animals around...heck, again we were raised with lots of cats and dogs and birds. So I know my mom has that same furry streak too. Though I doubt either mom or my brother have embraced it as much as I have. Still, it's interesting to think about things like that running in familys, and wondering just how much is nature vs. nurture.

Just a few thoughts.

Ack!

Sorry all, I realize I've been avoiding my avid fans...well, all three of you at least. You probably aren't aware of this, but I work at Washington Navy Yard. Granted, the building I work in is on the other side of the base from where the shooting happened, but that is where I work. I happened to have been on my regular day off on Monday, so I was home all comfy-cozy when the events went down. This also means I didn't have my car stuck on base, which is very nice. Everyone who was there had to leave their cars behind when they eventually allowed to leave, and only today are they allowed to go pick up their vehicles. At the moment, only mission essential personnel are being allowed to come into work, so anyone who has to pick up a car has to leave immediately. The base is still being treated as a crime scene.

Anyway, all is well here. I'm just hanging around waiting until we're able to go back to work. My co-workers, as far as I know, are all safe and accounted for. I did know a couple of people at NAVSEA, but I haven't had any contact with them for a couple years, so I don't know if they were caught up in the mess or not. I'll have to ask around when we go back to work. So yeah...fun stuff.

This just in!

I discovered that if you take the aluminum seal from a can of almonds (or probably any can that has an aluminum seal), and roll it up, it will work just like a stylus for modern touch screen technology. It's as accurate as your depth perception will allow. I've been meaning to get a stylus for my tablet, now it looks like I don't have to.

You may return to your regularly scheduled day now.

In other news, July was the second Camp NaNoWriMo, and I actually made 50,000 words for this one. I had started the on in April, but the project fell apart before I got very far, so that was an incomplete. Next...on to the real NaNo in November. I should be a co-ML in Northern Virginia this year, if they approve me. I've already been plotting with the real ML, so either way, I'll probably be involved.

Mavin's Baseball Terminology 101
Crazy dancing mouse
mavinmaverick
Not too long ago, during a game (I think it was football, for the record), I used the term "monkey stomp." There was some confusion over this idea from certain people, so I decided I needed to start a lexicon of terminology to explain what I mean by certain things. Of course, since I happen to watch baseball more than any other sport, I've started developing this lexicon with baseball in mind. Having said that, here's is my every growing list of terms any fan should know.

1. Monkey Stomp - When one team scores more than 10 points, and the other team can't seem to manage even a single curly number (anything above 1).

2. Pissing Contest - When the score keeps going back and forth, often resulting in a very high scoring game. This will often go into extra innings, and is generally the result of two very well matched teams.

3. That's a Game - When the score is very close, and it's a battle to the end. This can turn into a Pissing Contest, and also go into extra innings.

4. Bitch Slap - Usually used for "rubber games" in which one team may have Monkey Stomped the other team during a game, and the other team turns it around by Monkey Stomping back during the next game. This term can also be used for rival teams, where one of them usually wins the games, but the underdog comes out of nowhere and wins by a large margin.

I will add more to this as I think of them. Feel free to contribute as well.

Moved

mavinmaverick
I am moved. Well, for the most part. We moved on Tuesday from a little one-bedroom apartment to a three-level rental townhouse. The last time we moved, we abused our friends, and it was something of a fuster cluck, as some of you may remember. This time we hired movers, and while it wasn't cheap, it was at least efficient. We got a quote for 6 hours, and it took them 5.5 hours, so we did save a bit of money. We also have until Oct 31 to finish out the lease on the apartment, so we had the movers take the larger items and many heavy boxes, then we're slowly transporting over what's left. Then we have to clean the old apartment. Anyone like cleaning more than I do? I'm about tired of that place. LOL

We're going to have a roommate in the new place. Some of you may know Matt, aka "Hetrosexual Lifepartner." He's moving most of his stuff in today some time, but he's staying at his parent's place for the rest of the week because he's dog/house sitting for them. Yesturday the dog figured out that he could actually get up the stairs, and he spent a good part of the day in Matt's room. We figured if Matt didn't hurry up and get himself in, we would let the dog have his room. LOL Unfortunately after following me up and down the stairs a couple times, the dog got tired of them and refused to come down to get his dinner. I had to carry him down the stairs...I don't recommend this after a long day of running back and forth between apartment and house, and lugging stuff around. This may be why my shoulder hurts this morning...

The cat seems to be setteling in well. She spends most of the time in our bedroom, where her food and kitty box are. There's also a window where we put the bed, and last night I opened it up for her (no, it had nothing to do with the pleasent night breeze...not at all...) She sat on my husband's pillow and looked out the window for quite awhile. She does like to follow me around a bit when I'm there though, which will be a problem once Matt moves in, because we'll probably have the doors closed a bit more often. She's going to go nuts trying to get into the bathroom when I'm showering, or out of the bedroom when I leave in the morning for work. Otherwise, she seems to be happy with the arrangement.

Neither of the animals has yet discovered the basement, which is furnished. This will be where the boys will have the "nerd den." There was talk of calling it a "man cave" but I can see myself down there as well, so I suggested it would be more aptly titled the "nerd den." We'll see what sticks. Once the boys are down there more often, the dog will probably end up down there as well. He wasn't happy about being left alone in the house yesterday. Every time I came back from a "stuff" run, he would jump up on the back door and peer out the window with is big, sad eyes. He even barked once when I was leaving...poor baby.

We got the internet set up without a problem. Though my husband did say he had to enter the user name and password something like 33 times. I don't know if this is an exaggeration or not, but at least it worked each time he had to enter it...and that's pretty good, because I wasn't 100 percent sure on the user name. I usually copy and paste it when I need to access something at the internet provider site.

Well, that's probably enough for now. I'm at work today and I'm rather tired...but I did get surprised with donuts this morning, so all is well.

Darn you, Loganberrybunny!

So, Logan made a very nice pony for himself, and I thought, that's pretty awesome. So, here's my pony.

Introducing, SkyWriter!

SkyWriter is a pegasus pony, who is sky colored; blue and white to symbolize a cloudy sky. I choose blue initially because it's my favorite color, and the flying bit is my association with avians everywhere. I'm not as big on the magical abilities of unicorns, and the earth ponies area bit plain, so pegasus ponies are where it's at. Not to mention main fursona is avian.

I'm also a writer, so getting the writing in there is important. I would have liked to have joined a pencil with the plane icon, but I thought that would look too cluttered. And because the background is white, it would have been difficult to actually get a little bit to smoke writing to show up. So, I just put a skywriting-type biplane for the cutie mark.

Hum...that's about all I can think of to say. If anyone else in interested in making a pony, I used the same tool Logan did: General Zoi's Pony Creator.

More Birthday Goodness!

In celebration of my birthday, I went out all out. Pictured below is the subject cake that I cobbled together from a couple different recipes. My first intent was to make a relatively healthy cake, as my husband and I are trying to lose weight. I found the chocolate sponge cake recipe with this in mind, and it originally had fresh fruit on top of it. Well, I really love mixing raspberry and chocolate, so I figured I would find some kind of recipe for a raspberry compote to put on top. Thinking that the compote would make the cake soggy, I decided I should protect the sponge cake by adding a layer of chocolate ganache. So, without further ado, here is my extra special and not terribly healthy Chocolate Ganache Raspberry Sponge Cake. Recipe(s) available upon request.
